Champions League Jerseys Designs
As a massive soccer fan and supporter I thought it would be only fitting to test myself in designing jerseys for three of the world’s largest clubs. With this goal in mind, I did not just want to choose to redesign a standard kit for a club, but instead I came up with the concept of working hard to create special Champions League edition kits. If you are unfamiliar with the UEFA Champions League, it is an annual club football competition organized by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and contested by top-division European clubs. It is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world and the most prominent club competition in European soccer. It is played by the champions of various national leagues and, for some nations, one or more runners-up. It is a very selective tournament, only allowing entry to the best clubs in the world. The Champions League is something that teams really take special pride in being a part of each season, so I have always questioned why they do not create a special kit to wear for the occasion.
Over the past few years I have noticed team’s kits starting to look more and more alike. Teams like Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester United, Juventus, all big clubs, have been using the same template with very little special design on it distinguishing from one another. Besides changing colors, there is not much difference. While gathering opinions from around the soccer community, I found that the boring and repetitive designs are not getting people excited. There is something really special in the potential of the designs each club chooses to wear. It is a building block in creating a form of energy surrounding a team that should get everyone, players and fans alike, excited.
As soccer fan and designer Marlon Feeney states, “People love fashion; people love football; mash them together, and they go crazy for it.” In creating and exploring these jersey designs, I want to show that a soccer jersey can be more than just a jersey. It can be an appealing design that does the work to inspire fan solidarity and generate excitement and pride in the community.
Throughout the years Barcelona Football Club’s main jersey has more or less stuck to the same blue and red striped kits, creating different variations of how the stripes are presented but always remaining very linear. In the 2015/16 Barcelona displayed horizontal stripes on their home kit for the first time in their 115-year history. I believe it is time that they take the next step and try something new. Keep in mind that this jersey would not replace their main home jersey, so the historic and classic striped jersey would still exist with this champions league edition one.
Juventus are known by many names among their fans and one of them is ”Le Zebre” or “The Zebras” in reference to their famous usage of black and white. With this in mind, I was inspired to use the animals pattern to create a bold striking design that captured the power of the club through using the elegance of the zebra.
PSG or Paris Saint Germain is a French club that has become France’s biggest club. In 2011 the club was taken over by QSI which stand for Qatar Investment Group. Since then, they have invested over 1 billion dollars just alone for buying players for the team. With all of this money being put into the club they started to win more and more. This jersey is designed to be a tribute to the current owners of the club as they have changed the presence PSG has had in soccer.
